In "A Place Called Canterbury," author Dudley Clendinen writes about the 400 days he spent at his mother's senior citizen apartment building/nursing home in Tampa, Fla., where the average age of its residents is 86. Clendinen became intimately involved with the lives of its residents and staff and weaved what has been described as a delightful soap opera.

While I enjoyed Clendinen's book and his observations I found a much greater insight in the DVD produced by an 18 year old, Andrew Jenks, who lived in a Florida Assisted Living and filmed the experience. Check out www.andrewjenksroom335.com
ReplyDeleteAs for other memorable books - Lunch at the Piccadilly by Clyde Edgerton, Old Friends by Tracy Kidder, or one of my newest favorites, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (best on audio books). These are a good start.
